What Moodle 5.3 draws itself

The components of Moodle's own design system (mds-*), what each is for and where this reference covers it.

Moodle 5.3 ships a design system of its own, a set of components with the prefix mds-. A plugin that shows one of these parts uses Moodle’s component, not a copy. This is the list in the stylesheet of 5.3, and where each is documented here.

How to use it

  • In Moodle 5.3, where a page shows one of these parts, write the mds- markup; the design system does not restyle it.
  • In Moodle 4.x there are no mds- classes: use the Bootstrap component of the same name, which the rest of this reference documents.
  • Never mix both in the same screen: the 4.x and 5.x versions of a plugin may differ in markup and share the look.
