Filter chips

Small toggles that narrow a list, with a count, and the removable chips of the filters already applied.

A filter chip narrows a list with one press. A group of chips is a filter bar; an applied filter is a chip with a button to remove it. Use them for the few filters people use all the time, and a form for the rest.

When to use it

Use it

  • Three to six chips, each with a short label and, when it helps, a count.
  • aria-pressed on a chip that toggles; the group has a label.
  • Show the applied filters as chips with a remove button, and a “Clear all” link.

Don't

  • Use chips for navigation between pages: those are tabs.
  • Put a long list of options in chips: use a select or a menu.
  • Let the chosen state depend on colour alone: the tint, the weight and the count all change.

Anatomy

A button (dd-chip) with a label, an optional count (dd-chip-count) and, once chosen (aria-pressed="true"), a tint of the primary colour. An applied filter (dd-chip-applied) holds a remove button (dd-chip-remove). The group is dd-chips.

Variants and states

The bar of filters, the applied filters with their remove buttons, and the states of a chip side by side.

Combinations

Combination Use it for
Chips × list The chips sit over the list and the list answers at once, with a pager under it.
Applied × empty state A filter with no results shows the empty state of a search and a way to clear the chips.
Chips × search field The field filters by text, the chips by kind; both show as applied filters.

What Didactika adds and why

What it gives Why it helps
A pill with a count It is the one place in the system where a pill shape is the best fit: it reads as a switch and the count tells what will be left before pressing.
The chosen chip changes tint, weight and count Three signals, so it is clear without relying on colour.
Applied filters can be removed one by one The user undoes a single decision instead of starting over.

Classes

Class What it does
dd-chips A group of chips
dd-chip A chip; aria-pressed or active when chosen
dd-chip-count The number of results
dd-chip-applied An applied filter
dd-chip-remove The button that removes it

Accessibility

  • aria-pressed on chips that toggle, with the group labelled by aria-label or a heading.
  • The remove button has a label that names the filter (“Remove Mathematics”).
  • Announce the new number of results after a change.
