Page header

The top of a screen of a plugin: where you are, what this is, and what you can do here.

Every screen of a plugin starts the same way: the breadcrumb, the title with its context and the actions of the page. Users learn where to look, and the main action is always in the same place.

When to use it

Use it

  • The breadcrumb above, the title and a line of context (who, how many, until when), the actions on the right.
  • One primary action; the rest as secondary buttons or icon buttons with a title.
  • An icon tile before the title when the screen is about one object (a course, a user).

Don't

  • Put two titles or repeat the breadcrumb in the title.
  • Bury the main action in a menu.
  • Add tabs or filters inside the header: they go right below it.

Anatomy

A header (dd-page-header) with the breadcrumb, a row (dd-page-header-row) holding the main block (dd-page-header-main: tile, dd-page-title and dd-page-subtitle) and the actions (dd-page-actions), and a hairline under it that separates it from the content.

Variants and states

On a narrow screen the actions go below the title and wrap; the icon buttons keep their size.

Combinations

Combination Use it for
Header × tabs The tabs of the screen sit right under the hairline, as part of the same block.
Header × chips The filter chips open the content, under the header.
Tile × object The tile carries the icon of the object type, so the screen is recognised before the title is read.

What Didactika adds and why

What it gives Why it helps
A fixed order: path, title, actions The eye learns it once and finds the same things in every plugin.
The context under the title It answers “which one is this?” without opening anything.
The actions on the right, the main one last It follows the direction of reading: you finish at the action that moves forward.

Classes

Class What it does
dd-page-header The block with its bottom line
dd-page-header-row The row of title and actions
dd-page-header-main Tile and texts
dd-page-title The title
dd-page-subtitle The line of context
dd-page-actions The buttons of the page

Accessibility

  • The title is the h1 of the page; there is only one.
  • The breadcrumb is a nav with a label and aria-current="page" on the last item.
  • Icon-only actions have a title and an aria-label.
