Description list

The facts of one thing as a label and a value on each line: a course, a user, a rule.

When a screen shows the attributes of one thing (not a list of things), a table with a header is the wrong shape. A description list puts each label in a column and each value beside it, so the eye runs down the values.

When to use it

Use it

  • For the details of one object: a course, a user, a rule.
  • Short labels, in the same order as in the form that creates the object.
  • Put a badge for a status and a link for something that has its own page.

Don't

  • Use it for several objects: that is a table.
  • Mix labels and values in a paragraph.
  • Leave a label without a value: write “None”.

Anatomy

A dl (dd-dl) with pairs of term (dt, in a muted colour) and description (dd, in the ink colour), separated by a hairline. On a narrow screen, or with dd-dl-stacked, the label goes above its value.

What Didactika adds and why

What it gives Why it helps
Labels in a shared column Values start at the same point, so they are compared without effort.
Stacked layout on a narrow screen Nothing is cut or squeezed on a phone.

Classes

Class What it does
dd-dl The list, in two columns
dd-dl-stacked The label above its value

Accessibility

  • It is a real description list (dl, dt, dd), which assistive technology announces as pairs.
  • Do not put block content in a dt.
